Depends on what you're trying to accomplish. For instance you should create Categories and Sections for your content and if you want to create separate "child" sites under the parent site you can look at the multisite component. There are also components for AD integration and single sign-on. I can also tell you that you may not be satisfied with the canned templates that come with it so you may have to venture out to locate a template that fits your environment. From there you'll need to customize it via the CSS stylesheet. This can become an issue if you're not creative or familiar with editing style sheets. For reading material there are a host of sites supporting Joomla so you shouldn't have a problem googling for help on a particular issue.
