+1 on taking away local admin rights. Never have had virus or spyware issues. The users may squirm, but in the end, it is not their computer.

A lot of malware is incredibly tenacious; everyone needs to start treating infected machines the same way you would a hacked computer. You can't trust ANYTHING on the machine; you have absolutely NO way to know EXACTLY what was done to it. The only way to be 100% sure it's clean is to format and reinstall. The single best way of preventing it from coming back: Take away local admin from your end users. The principle of least privilege has been a best practice in suitably capable operating environments for 3 or 4 decades for a reason.
