Our old 4-tape Sony AIT-2 library bit the dust. I would have loved to get a
LTO2 library, but, well, everyone's trying to save money these days,
including the company. So, I found an awesome deal on Ebay for a Sony
Lib-81 8-cartridge AIT2 autoloader ($100 including shipping!)

I took the thing apart and the innards are wicked cool to watch. Anyway, it
looks like the tape drive MIGHT be upgradable inside. The instruction
manual notes that there are varieties of the LIB-81 that go up to AIT-5,
which would get the unit into the multiple terabyte range.

Has anyone attempted this, changing out the drive?
