Not exactly. But on a couple of ATL libraries I worked on in the past, the tape robot and the drives were all separate components. The robot didn't actually "talk" to the tape drives; it just moved tapes around. There were separate SCSI IDs and connectors for each on the back. That meant you could put each drive on a separate bus. If you wanted them on the same bus, you needed cables to connect between each component, despite it being all one chassis. The drives just slid out on rails for upgrades.
