This Brother tape is M-2312PK, 8 meters of tape per cart. It's extremely thin so there isnt much stress trying to pull it apart when you wrap it around and stick it to itself - in fact I've labeled dozens of cables in that fashion with this tape and it is excellent (probably because it isnt laminated). A nice aspect is that the labeler itself is dirt cheap, it's a "Home & Hobby" labeler, model PT-65.

What I have found that works fabulously are Brady cable markers. You can use an ultra-fine Sharpie to write on them, they are self-laminating and they do not come off easily like P-touch labels do. I buy what they call the 'porta-pack' (just a booklet of labels) PWC-PK-1. You can get that label material in a roll and use it in one of Brady's labeller machines, but their label makers tend to be quite expensive (but there is a ton of functionality built into it). I find the porta-pak and a Sharpie to do just as good of a job for a lot less money. You can get them from Grainger or other similar supply house.
