As I said I keep them forever unless disk space is at a premium :). On the 
other hand I have been removing these folders for years as needed and on dozens 
of servers and have never had a problem.

Of course the first person to follow my advice will be the first person to ever 
get bit by deleting them :)

Remember, Murphy's Law teaches us that only the one(s) you remove will ever 
cause a problem. I'm a bit compulsive about cleaning up my HD, even though I'll 
never use it all, but I make it a point to keep these particular folders around 
for months before discarding them.
