+1, saw this too and the rack mount APC unit I had and I had to trim some pieces to get the old batteries out because the old ones were so swollen! IIRC it was an 1100-ish series unit built in 2002-ish.

I always figured it was something about the site, or ancient batteries, or something, but it's sounding like this is a systemic problem they have.
