There are many other ways to lose your data, and saying that you "CAN'T" protect your data because Bitlocker is missing is incorrect. That said, there's a tradeoff. If you lock yourself out of a bitlocker-ed machine, you're SoL. The support issues would be enormous for Microsoft dealing with poorly run SOHO type outfits that accidently enable Bitlocker without doing the necessary planning around key escrow/backup.
