If you did the inplace upgrade in a large org you'd definitely see 40%+ space gain overnight from the SD single instancing here. Even then so it's not generally worth the hassle for the minimal amount of disk space you typically get back.

I've seen some multi-GB DIT files that have benefitted significantly from compaction. But this is for a large bank (Global Fortune 500 company) that's had some of these DCs since they first put in Win2k AD Cheers Ken ________________________________ From: Christopher Bodnar [[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, 26 March 2009 7:42 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: Compact the ntds.dit I have heard of compacting the AD DB, but not as a regular maintenance task. Take a look at this: http://www.petri.co.il/active_directory_offline_defragmentation.htm If you had a very large number of objects deleted and you wanted to reclaim the space, I would say do it as a one-time procedure. Not as a maintenance task. According to these videos I have to study from, the guy sez once a month, heck I never did it and non of the engineers here has ever heard of doing it. It's not like we have a revolving door here, 2 or 3 accounts a month. Luke L.
