The weirdest thing I have seen is a new profile created, but that's only if I've changed the machine name and rejoined. It goes from \Documents and Settings\<UserID> to \Documents and Settings\<UserID>.000, but the old profile is always retained so worst case is copy the old profile to the new one.
In my experience the old profiles remain on the machine unless you manually kill the folder or delete the users profile via "User Profiles".
