My answer below won't help right away. However, you should be able to telnet/ssh to your switch(es) and take a look at your arp tables. This will show which MAC addresses are attached to which ports. There are several ways to get the MAC address from the target machine, including PSEXEC and GETMAC.
Last week I finally got a chance to implement NetDisco. OMG - what a cool OSS package. http://www.netdisco.org I'm running it, of course, on FreeBSD, but it says it runs on Linux. It's an involved installation, but the control it gives, and the views it provides, are really, really, really, really useful. No, really. Just the fast little network map alone is worth it.
