+1 on the E-series. The backlit keyboard, built in mic and camera are nice addons, but the power and battery life on these are phenemonal. The construction is by far better than previous models. I would stick with Lattitudes or Precisions, XPS are more consumer oriented, though higher end then Inspiron's. I have to ask, why no external monitor? Space issues? IF the 17" is a requirement, I think you're looking exclusively at the Precisions, then.
