We got an XPS unit for one of our carpet design guys. He seems to like it well enough.

I would stick with Lattitudes or Precisions, XPS are more consumer oriented, though higher end then Inspiron's. I have to ask, why no external monitor? Space issues? IF the 17" is a requirement, I think you're looking exclusively at the Precisions, then.
