If you don't want users to get a username/password prompt *and* they don't have
accounts in your directory then you'll have to enable anonymous access. But
obviously you run the risk that some nutter that gains access to your network
decides to print a 1,000,000+ page document.

Yes, the printer is a standard shared/listed in directory printer in AD Server
2008. I don't want our guests to get the user name/password prompt.

The only permission I see that might have worked, but didn't, was "anonymous
user".

Do you mean connecting to \\servername\share<file:///\\servername\share>? That
works regardless of whether you have AD or not.
If you are talking about printers that are published into AD by a print server,
all that is created is a printQueue object (you can view these easily using
ADSIEdit or similar) that points the client to
\\servername\share<file:///\\servername\share>

Subject: Connect to AD printers outside AD?

Hi Folks,

Is it possible to connect to an AD printer, using the AD share name, when the
user does not have an account in AD? I would like to allow our visitors to
easily connect to printers near our conference rooms. I know they can connect
with IP direct, but the path is easier for most users.

Thanks,
Tom
