Either way, i365 would be a vendor to look at.

They will do offsite/online backup using their servers for you, or they will
give you the software to be your own "online backup provider." If you need
additional hardware to be your own provider, they have it all packaged in an
appliance. I tried the first and second solutions (no experience with the
appliance) and it's the best vendor I have ever had.

Ahh... well, my thought was to use an existing solution as that would probably
be cheaper. We already have our data mirrored to another server that is not in
the same building as the other (it's in our distribution warehouse about ¼ mile
up the hill) using DFS. We also have another location out of town where we
could, theoretically, put another machine up there and copy the data up there
for DR purposes, I guess. Trouble is right now, we don't have the bandwidth for
something like this.

Now that you mention it, I suppose it wouldn't be THAT much trouble or cost (at
least no recurring costs) to get another server and set it up to duplicate the
data and then move it to our out-of-town facility (has a hardware VPN back to
us) and use it for DR. That's an interesting idea... I suppose once the data is
mirrored onto a new server, it wouldn't be that much bandwidth.... Hmm...
something to think about, I guess. 'Course the "up-front" costs would be fairly
large....

I guess, at least to start with, we'd probably want an existing solution. Maybe
later as the economy improves, I could convince management to invest in a third
server we could use for DR purposes up at our remote location.

Wondering if you were looking for an existing online service solution (Iron
Mountain, Mozy, etc.) or the possibility of putting together your own data
lines, software, storage, etc. at a remote location.

Explain, please... Are you asking do I want to set up the backups myself or
have someone come in and set up the backups, or what?

Do you want to host this yourself or have a service do it for you?

Subject: Internet based backup

I'm looking at adding an internet based backup service as a way to have an
off-site backup for DR purposes. I am afraid that the initial backup
(approximately ½ terabyte) would kill our internet connection, though... :-/

What I need is something that is 1) low-cost (or at least not going to charge
an arm and three legs) 2) secure and 3) redundant (both redundant servers and
redundant internet connection.)

Anyone got any suggestions???
