That sounds like a mis-configured Barracuda. What you describe is deep header scanning. Something you can tell the Cuda to do but you should only do that if the first hop is known to you...for example if you have your own relay in a dmz that relay's it to your Cuda. So you tell the cuda to ignore the first hop and check the second.
So if they are denying you based upon your Notes machine as the second hop then the admin set it up wrong. It is unfortunate with 'ready to go' boxes like the Cuda they often end up in the hands of small shop admin's that might not know the ins and outs of email yet.
