Hi Bryan, long time no talk. I had a similar issue with a W2K8 box recently, and the eventual cause was a second IP address on the NICs (don't ask LOL) that the activation process was attempting to use. Once I fixed that, I was able to re-enter the product key, run slmgr and get things working in a heartbeat. It was basically a networking/DNS type of thing rather than an actual activation issue. Not sure if that will help with yours, but it might be worth a look...
