I bought a Dell laptop at Costco that came with Vista Home Premium 64. I own a
full blown Ultimate with the media. Wanted to upgrade or switch the laptop to
Ultimate without paying for anything, but according to what I've been told, I
have to wipe it out and reload it - no way to just register the valid Ultimate
code I have on the existing load.
I don't want to do that because it has all the base loaded utilities and such
and seems like a waste.
I may return it due to Costco's generous return policy and then get one with
Windows 7 on it when that comes out.

As a side note, what does everyone do if you get a new laptop that doesn't have
pci slots anymore and you have a paid for pci hi speed sprint card  you can't
use anymore?

I was given a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate as a gift. Now, to upgrade it'll
cost me $220, or go for a cheaper "Windows 7 Home Premium Full" edition, which
will still cost me $200.

Ouch.

For that much money, I'll stick with Vista. Maybe I'll even buy a Mac Mini, and
give my machine to my wife, she could use the upgrade... Maybe not; I can
handle the idiosyncrasies of Vista, but I doubt my wife will.

Looking forward to OEM pricing, hoping it is an easier pill to swallow.

Microsoft, please take note: My opinion is that it's still too expensive!
