You cant mix and match OEM and VL keys. To use the VL key, you need to install using VL media. I would suggest a reinstall using appropriate media since it's against the OEM license to use the Dell disk on any machine other than the one it was purchased with.

We have volume licensing for XP, so the actual authentication key is no problem -- but after all the installation, activation won't work and the MS system appears to believe the installation media is not genuine. So, I can't even get to a person to explain the issue to get a phone activation. Is there anything I can do short of a complete reinstall to fix this?
