And..Twitter works worldwide. I documented my recent trip to China through
Twitter. Cheaper than making phone calls and folks back home could know if
I was OK or not.

That's not a very maintainable solution unless you control the carrier used
for each number. If you are sending to numbers outside of your control

they are on the same carrier as they were the last time you texted them.

Another problem, for some, in using the email addresses below is the lack of
support for numbers outside the USA.

I find Rod's Twitter idea quite intriguing.

just a matter of the extra work of finding the carrier for each number and
maintaining that info ...

Gotta wonder what the additional value is in such a service because you can
send text messages from any email client already if you know the phone
number and gateway information. Here's a few of the current text
gateways...

Verizon: [email protected]
AT&T: [email protected]
Sprint: [email protected]
T-Mobile: [email protected]
Nextel: [email protected]
Cingular: [email protected]
Virgin Mobile: [email protected]
Alltel: [email protected]
CellularOne: [email protected]
Omnipoint: [email protected]
Qwest: [email protected]

Quick look on Google re: Teleflip indicates they're out of biz as of
sometime in 2008 but someone suggested http://www.beltic.com/ as
alternative. Have no idea what they're like, if it really does what is
needed, etc, but might give you a leg up.

there used to be a service at teleflip.com , you just sent a short email to
the phone # at teleflip.com like

[email protected] and they would deliver the text to the phone
regardless of carrier

just tried and cannot reach their site though, not sure they're still alive

I'm looking at the possibility of using a service that allows me to text ~20
to 100 people per month. I won't know their cellular provider, so just using
email-to-text wouldn't do it. Does anyone have any words of wisdom for this
volume, or use a service they're happy with? Any gotchyas I need to avoid?
TIA.
