I can confirm that's the correct default config for an HP switch serial console. I can also confirm you do need a "null modem" cable to hook up a switch with a DB-9 port to a computer. That's because both the switch and the computer are wired as DTE (data terminal equipment) in RS-232-speak. A modem is DCE (data communications equipment).
