  Yah, ours do too, but I didn't know when that feature was
introduced, and 9600 was the default I learned many moons ago.
(Actually, my memory could be corrupting HP with something else, since
(as you note) so many things used 9600-8-N-1.  But I think that was
it.)

  As I recall, sending any two keystrokes in succession is sufficient
for auto-detect (e.g., [ENTER] twice), but it's been forever since I
helped run a BBS.  :-)
