On a good computer, in notepad... 
hold down CTRL and press BACKSPACE you get the little square you are
talking about.
Maybe the CTRL key(s) are stuck?  Try hammering them?

Ah... sorry, missed that.
I don't think it is the keyboard then, so swapping it out may not help.
:(
Maybe open up the box and clean the keyboard connection on the
motherboard.
