If you want something that the client do not have to "play" with, try
Jscape. There is a free version, depending on the use you make of it.

For your client side problems, Total Commander has a built-in FTP client
which allows you to have (for example), your C:\ drive in the left pane
and the remote FTP server in the right. Click click click, upload.
