They do make dimmable CFLs but they're a bit pricier. I probably have 40 CFLs
versus 2 Incandescents in my house but I live in Fl so the cold issue doesn't
affect us as much here.

Agree with them not working well in cold environments. Also unless
something has changed they don't work with dimmer switches. And,
because of their mercury content, they are supposed to be desposed of
properly - I wonder what percentage actually end up in land fills.

Shame, as in my not so humble opinion, the CF bulbs don't live up to
hype (
literally ) ... I've had CF's 'burn out' within a year or two, and not
the 5
+ years their packaging claimed ... And they don't work well in a cold
environment ( garage, cold bathroom in the winter, etc as they take a
while
to get to proper brightness .. I want to flip the switch and have LIGHT
!!!

Hopefully the cost of distribution and manufacture will be worked out a
few
years to replace CF bulbs with household LED .. They're even more energy
efficient, almost no heat at all, and much better longevity ...

If you want to keep using incandescents, you need to stock up. Already
illegal in the EU, going to be illegal in the US in 3 years or so:

The incandescent light bulb, one of the most venerable inventions of
its

era but deemed too inefficient for our own, will be phased off the
U.S.
market beginning in 2012 under the new energy law just approved by
    Congress.
