Thanks ... Think you're referring to this : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307917
Issue is that when I first came to the client, Exchange 2000 was on server OLD2, and servers OLD1 and OLD2 were domain controllers ... Not too long ago I helped to upgrade the domain to 2003 and installed two new servers, NEW1 and NEW2 as domain controllers. Exchange 2003 was installed on NEW2 and mailboxes, smtp gateway, smarthosts, etc were migrated from OLD2 to NEW2 ... Then their staff powered off OLD1 and got rid of hardware ( why? Don't know, suspect someone has a new machine at home now, nothing I can change as hired consultant/contractor ). I had to run NDSUTIL in metadata cleanup mode to remove references to OLD1 as a domain controller But ESM still shows OLD1 as an Exchange server, and messages to old1.company.local are in smtp queue ... And I cannot figure out how to remove the references to OLD1. Ah the fun of contract consulting to small business sites <sarcasm intended> Erik Goldoff IT Consultant Systems, Networks, & Security -----Original Message----- From: Brian Desmond [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, August 22, 2009 12:54 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: how to get rid of phantom exchange server in ESM ? There is a technet or KB article (don't have it handy) called something like How to remove the First Exchange 2000 server in the organization and/or How to remove the Last Exchange 2000 Server in the Organization. There is a bunch of stuff you need to do so I'd review those. Wow ! Just posted this to the exchange admin list and got 20 "Out of Office" autoreplies !!! Ironic indeed ! Got tasked with a weird client site ... They had Exchange 2000, recently upgraded domain to 2003r2 and added Exchange 2003 ... while preparing to remove original Exchange 2000 server, I see in the Exchange System Manager one other Exchange server, but that server no longer exists. In about 6 months I've never heard of that server for email, and their tech basically ripped it off the wire and got rid of the hardware. I ran the ntdsutil metadata cleanup to remove it from the domain controllers in AD, but still can't see how to remove it from Exchange... any tips or ideas here ? thanks Erik Goldoff ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ <http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/> ~ ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ <http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/> ~ ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ <http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/> ~
