OK, I'm having this weird issue with a Dell Optiplex 760. I'm running 64bit Win7, and have two video cards, one PCI and one PCI express to drive 3 monitors. This configuration works great on 4GB RAM or less. As soon as I put in more than 4G I have issues. (I've tried 4GB with using 2-2GB sticks, and 4-1GB sticks with no problems - but both 4-2GB or 2-2GB + 2-1GB create issues as well.) I originally thought it might even be a power issue (or lack thereof), but I think I eliminated that as a possibility by shutting down one hard drive and powering the main one off a separate power source.
The main way this problem manifests itself is that on the monitor that is being displayed from the PCI card, it doesn't want to draw the background (solid gray). It instead is just black, until you move a window over it, and then it will draw the background when that window is removed. OK, that isn't a major deal, just an annoyance, but other times, rather than turning to the normal background color, it instead displays a gradient, going from red in the upper right to green in the lower left, yellow in the lower right, and black in the upper left. And when you move a window over there, inside the window will be only that gradient pattern - nothing else is visible, but you can still see the outline and header of the window. The system also seems to get very unstable and just sort of wonky. I'm wondering if there is some sort of memory conflict between the memory card and a memory address space above 4gigs? Has anyone ever seen this? I don't want to have to give up my 3 monitors, and I really can use the 8GB of RAM, as I do a lot of "virtual lab" type stuff on this machine. Anyone have any ideas?
