Marty - I suggest you spend some quality time reading. Sharepoint can be finnicky (technical term) if OS or WSS or even DB version/patches vary. If you have no idea how to use STSADM, you aren't quite ready to do a move or migration. A good place to start is http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc288664.aspx?ppud=4
Based on your question, I would guess you have a single server - but it is still a "farm" in WSS lingo. So you do need to pay attention to all the roles of the farm. It is not difficult, but it helps to have a good understanding of all the pieces.
