  As others have said, that depends entirely on what the desktops are
doing.  Forty desktops just browsing the web and reading email should
be fine on a single gigabit uplink.  Heck, a single 100 megabit uplink
would probabbly work.  Forty desktops doing motion video editing
against a file server, not so much.

  Run a few extra UTP cables between the IDF and the MDF, and you can
always add link aggregation if you need to.
