Well, there is obviously a continuum between $10k and $10m For the "small guy", there are still some benefits. You could outsource your file sharing (for example). Why pay for an in-house FTP server if you can get away with some hoster? What about websites - running your own web server inhouse -vs- a hoster? What about email (running your own Exchange vs BPOS or an outsourced email solution) etc.
Not everything works for every business. If you are a very small business (e.g. 1-2 people) then running everything in-house is probably going to be very expensive... We got nada for leverage.
