For such light duty as you describe, a decent netbook would do well for the writer. I recently bought two refurb Acer Aspire Ones (D250 - it takes 2g, comes with 1g) for $229 each from w00t.com - that should be all she needs, if the screen size and resolution are sufficient. Plus maybe a headset for the music. For the other, almost anything will do. Perhaps a refurb Dell.
