Martin, et al:

The most I know about this SAN is that it's called Hitachi Simple Modular
Storage 100 and it's pretty bare-bones, but then I don't think I need a lot
of bells and whistles. As best I can tell it doesn't have a lot of options
and pretty much you get to choose from a set of pre-set options and don't
get to pick and choose like you can with a NetApp or some other options. One
of the few things you can choose is single or dual-controller and
fiber-channel or iSCSI. And then you can choose from a set of pre-selected
storage sizes and that's pretty much all you get. I'm working on getting
more details as the former CDW rep hasn't handed out a lot of details yet. I
have some information I can forward to anyone who's interested (a set of 3
PDF files about 2-3 pages each) about HSMS.

As I said, I'm waiting to get some more details. What I've been told is that
Hitachi decided several years ago to get into the SMB market, but that
(according to the former CDW rep) there's not as much profit to be made from
this as there is from the medium-tier vendors such as NetApp, etc. so that
sales reps don't recommend this and that's why this is somewhat of an "open
secret." J

'Course I'm sure that's about half marketing BS, but I'm sure there's a
grain of truth in it. I did Google Hitachi Simple Modular Storage 100 and
found some information yesterday, so I know it exists. I still don't know
much about it.

An HDS SAN w 6TB for 20K?

A TRUE HDS SAN is a tier 1 storage product.

I can't even accurately guess, but with the needed tools, apps, etc, you are
looking at maybe $500K. Plus it would have to be professionally installed.
You are not going to be able to touch that thing. Except for provisioning.

I just don't buy it.

It would be interesting for you to post the specific model/config.

Also, I would urge you to stick with a local VAR. You are going to need help
standing this thing up, training, and in the event the whole thing tips
over, someone you can call in a hurry to come help.

In the interest of full disclosure and as you know, I work for a NetApp VAR
(wrong coast for you), and when we do an install, its top to bottom, with
training, and troubleshooting along the way. Also when a customer has a
problem, we are often the first person they call.

Ahh. Got a sales guy who used to work for CDW who thinks he can hook me up
with two dual-controller SANs, including on-board replication for a hair
over $20K. That's for about 6 Terabytes. I'll ask for more info in that
case. J

Hitachi (HDS) makes some awesome SANs. One of the tier 1 providers. Tier 1
price as well.

Just wondering if any of you have heard of NexSan? What about Hitachi?? Any
thoughts on either of these as a SAN vendor? I'm still trying to find
someone who'll really "wow" me with their product and give me what I need
for a price I can afford and get Management to sign off on. J
