If it's brand new, I would just back  up any personal data and run the HP 
restore tool.  Of course, if the user didn't make backup media, you may not be 
able to :-(, not sure how HP's Win7 restore procedure works.

HP's WinXP restore procedure re-partitions the C: drive to one large partition 
and installs the OS from scratch, which is why I suggested backing up.  

I would probably use BartPE and an external USB drive to back up the current 
system before proceeding.
