Try http://www.nato.int/ to see it in action. This is why I recommend using a registered domain name, owned by the organization, for all but the smallest of networks. Better to avoid the possibility of a name collision, even if it is remote. You can use a subdomain (corp.example.com) or a separate 2LD (example.com and example.net), but follow DNS specifications and best practices.
