Sure you can do it.

You still have to do the schema update at the forest root first though. 
Actually, wherever the schema master is, since schema updates go out to all DCs 
in the forest.

2003 forest with 1 subdomain. Can you upgrade the subdomain DC's to 2008 while 
leaving the root DC's at 2003? (I'm guessing yes but not recommended).



This subdomain has a one-way trust with another 2003 forest, are there caveats 
with that trust to upgrading the subdomain to 2008? (I'm guessing no).
