I have to agree that this is a bad idea on Google's part. I liked Eric's Brouwer remark about following the competition. Google has noted for bucking trends and thinking outside the box; this is a blatant copy-cat move. Bing hasn't been an overwhelmingly phenomenal success, and I'm pretty sure whatever success Bing has had isn't a result of the background picture. Meanwhile, Google's clean home page was practically a trademark in itself. I'm shaking my head, asking "What they were thinking?".
