I'm not so sure that's true.  Like many others, I hated it when I first saw
it, and I still do.  What you have to admit, however, is that every single
Google user in the universe now knows that he or she can add a customized
background image to the default Google search page.  Annoying the bejeezus
out of a lot of us for a few hours allowed them to gain near 100% knowledge
of a new feature, and I doubt they'll lose any customers because of it.
Conversely, they may gain some new ones b/c you have to have a Google
account to use the feature.
