Given that it was hung on this step:
"Install_sql_engine_core_shared_Cpu32_Action : Write_NativeImage_32.
Generating Native Images" and that the 'Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN
v4.0.30319_X86' service was in the pausing state (never did pause,
just said pausing), I'm thinking that the install calls for whatever
ngen.exe happens to be present to generate the processor-specific JIT
compilation process, and it hangs the box. Hard.

Wouldn't shut down. Had to power off the VM and start it up again,
then uninstall .NET 4 (a two reboot process), then the SQL install
went just fine.
