  There are lots of theories as to what made the "freezer trick" work
for HDDs, only some of which were mechanical.  Two common theories
were:

* Failed/marginal solder joint; cold causes metal to shrink and moves
it back into contact
* Integrated circuit chip is failing/marginal but runs at lower temperatures

  Either of those would work for a USB flash drive.
