Have you ever used PowerPoint for a presentation with embedded audio or video clips? Yes I know you could install Quicktime for this but why add more exe's to the system and more patch mechanisms if you don't need too. At least with WMP it is patched within the "Windows" patching mechanism. iTunes/Quicktime and any others will require a separate mechanism. Adding more to the OS just because you need or want it does not make sense. I do understand that will not fly when you are dealing with home users but in a business you should be looking at the bottom line. The more you add to a system the more you have to patch the more openings for someone to get in.
Users that I have dealt with like to get music and video and they are not real fast on the up-take as to whether it is legal for them to possess that material. With iTunes users can download stuff to their Apple device of choice and take it into the office for "backup/safe keeping/sharing". Do they care if the media is legally in their possession NO (at least most of the time). Why make it easy for the lawyers to ream out your company if by restricting things like iTunes is easy? At the office you can block sites and remove WMP from systems not needing it. All it takes is for some id10t to bring in something they should not and have someone see it and report it. We all know if the company has laidoff or fired people they make the best sources of information to lawyers or groups that monitor copyright/patent infringement.
