I've got an older Dell 700m with a 12 inch screen. The standard battery was
only good for a couple of hours at best, so I bought a larger battery. It
adds about 1 inch to the depth, and is slightly heavier, but it can last
close to 5 hours. When I've traveled overseas, I have a backpack with wheels
and a special laptop compartment which holds the laptop just fine without
taking up too much room in the backpack. I also have a sleeve to carry the
laptop locally. The netbooks are smaller depending on the screen, but you
still can't hang them on your belt like an iPhone. So, I would think that
for all purpose use, I'd rather have my 12 laptop. Not much bigger or
bulkier, but better for all round use.

Many models (HP and Dell, for example) have 10" screens with optional
1366x768 displays. I'm making sure that I get something with at least that
many pixels.

In truth, I'm looking at the 11.6" or 12" netbooks. While the smaller ones
are nice, they are tiny... as long as I get the good battery life, I think
I'll be happy. (My current laptop lasts 2 hours... max... on a good day. And
it's a little big for lugging around everywhere.)
