It's a second DC in an SBS domain. I have another Hyper-V server but it doesn't have nearly enough disk space to swing it over. I have a 64-bit desktop that I'm tempted to use for the swing, I'm.not sure 2008 R2 will install on it though.
If I have to I can DCPROMO it and pretty much rebuild from scratch as it's "just" DC/DNS/DHCP/ File/Print server, nothing fancier like Exchange ,SQL, IIS or other apps on it. DCPROMO demote, full data/registry backups, blow away 2K3, install 2K8 R2, config Hyper-V, install W2K3 R2, restore from backup, then DCPROMO promote. Certainly doable, but the time for the data to move from one place to another will take forever...then again so would a swing P2V, but tons less steps! Once I do this I'll stand up a 2K8 R2 VM and move features/functions over and then kill the 2K3 box...just wish I had more hardware for the swing. I have tons of NAS space, but no Hyper-V OS.. If not I'd really suggest you dcpromo it down first. Perhaps you can find a temp HyperV box to P2v it in to? To me it's like a swing migration like an SBS swong, but in this case it's a P2V "swing". I have a physical server with 2003 R2 on it. On this same physical box I'd like to put 2008 R2 w/ Hyper-V on it and somehow P2V the 2003 R2 machine onto it - anyone have any ideas? This server is a DC - can Ghost or something pull that off?
