IMO...avoid ANYTHING USB for 802.11, but that's just my opinion. If you can, get a real PCI card for the laptop, and skip the cheap stuff. I recommend Intel 5300/6200 (leveraging the Intel PROSet supplicant) or Atheros chipsets.
