Vendors are aiming for "value" pricing, as in "that's valuable to you, so I
can charge you more".    Or they try to make it about the amount of data
being backed up.

I love to ask them, "and how is the ability or support of your product
impacted by me backing up 5MB vs 5TB?   Right... Thought so."

Volume-based pricing for backups is ridiculous unless they're providing the
storage.  They'd better make all their money now, because between SAN
replication and cloud backups, their lunch is going to be eaten over the
next 24 months.
