Vendors are aiming for "value" pricing, as in "that's valuable to you, so I can charge you more". Or they try to make it about the amount of data being backed up.
I love to ask them, "and how is the ability or support of your product impacted by me backing up 5MB vs 5TB? Right... Thought so." Volume-based pricing for backups is ridiculous unless they're providing the storage.
