Scaling back a bit....consider the times when we've had cascading failures of the powergrid from realtively normal events... And then it has taken a day or more to get power back up. Invariably there are a few unlucky souls who don't have power for quite a bit longer (usually where the damage started, or damage was caused by the failure of the grid). That's the one I'm most afraid of, and is still fresh in my mind. My wife was in NYC during the blackout in 2003, all because some corporation wanted to save a buck for a few years and didn't keep parts of their grid clear of trees...
