Also remember that if you don't sign an authorization and release form,
allowing them to run the background check, then they can't run it.

It's also, as others have hinted, open to referral fraud, where the recruited
could have an undisclosed interest in referring as many candidates as possible
for the checks without any requirement to place them in employment.

What State do you live in?

You can request a copy of your background check and drug test. Also, would
suggest to check your credit history yearly to make sure that there isn't
anything fishy on there. You can go here -
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp and get a report yearly for
free (unlike the others that claim to be free and will charge you)

As others have mentioned here, I would look somewhere else. Companies will
cover the cost of the background checks and drug tests, this shouldn't come out
of your pocket.

Because, if I pay for something, I should have access to it. That includes the
drug results. What if it came back with a false positive? How would I know?

Also, what if the background check has false information on it? What if someone
stole my identity and I did not know about it? I had that happen to me. I was
trying to get a contract job a Fort Knox, and they did a credit check on me and
wanted to know when I lived in Florida. I have never lived in Florida. At that
point they said I should contact one of the credit reporting agencies to verify
my information. That is when I found out someone had stole my identity and
charged up over $30K in medical expenses. You know how hard it is to let the
company know that you are not the person they are trying to collect their
charges from? I had to sign at least three affidavits stating that I was not
the person who accrued those charges and that I never lived in Florida. Took
two months to get this all straightened out.

Seriously, it is not just the $50 or so dollars. It is the attitude that some
of the recruiting companies get the idea that, "Hey, we can save money by
passing these costs on the the prospective contractor." But this is before I
even have accepted a contract. I know, the paperwork says that they will deduct
those charges from the first paycheck, but I haven't even found out where the
job is at, let alone what the payrate is. And by the way this recruiter
sounded, when I talked to him, he didn't give me the payrate, or whether or not
I was accepted by their client. Just sounded like he wanted to get a whole pool
of people to accept this job/contract and then fill in the blanks, later.

I could see charging you up front and reimbursing you when you are hired. You

to the employer compared to your salary?

Subject: OT: Background Checks and Drug Test

To all,

I am looking at taking a contract position. I am currently talking to the
contracting rep about this position. He wants me to fill out some online forms,
standard stuff, but I am concerned about one of the forms.

This form is a release for a Background Check and Drug Screening. Now, I don't
mind the background check or the drug test. But what kinda irks me is that they
want to charge $10 for the Drug Test and $25 for the Background Check. What the
form basically says, is, that I am giving the contracting firm to deduct those
amounts from my first paycheck. I am also hesitant in filling out any forms for
them, as they haven't told me what the payrate is on this position.

I thought all Background Checks and Drug Test charges where the responsibility
of the contracting company?

What are your thoughts on this?
