It's a cost of doing business for the government by delivering an agreed
level of due diligence on staffing "quality". They should pay - period.
Working in FS, we don't charge people to do the extensive financial and
criminal vetting that we perform on all staff and consultants - it's an
accepted cost of business to meet a regulatory mandate. That said, I
should point out that I'm based in the UK and the rights of the employee
are far more enshrined over here, so it may be unfair to judge from afar
(still sounds disgusting to me though!).

+1 However I think you got ripped off. An FBI background check only
costs 35 bucks.

I am a government employee and the background is required by state law
upon starting and every five years. However I would not agree to it
unless you have a job offer that is contingent upon passing the checks.
Unlikely that you will change their mind, but I would just bow out now.
Assuming it wasn't a dream job or I really needed it.

I had to pay for mine @ my current gig. $50.00 (CAD) for the background
check, no drug test though.

        To all,

I am looking at taking a contract position. I am currently
talking to the contracting rep about this position. He wants me to fill
out some online forms, standard stuff, but I am concerned about one of
the forms.

This form is a release for a Background Check and Drug
Screening. Now, I don't mind the background check or the drug test. But
what kinda irks me is that they want to charge $10 for the Drug Test and
$25 for the Background Check. What the form basically says, is, that I
am giving the contracting firm to deduct those amounts from my first
paycheck. I am also hesitant in filling out any forms for them, as they
haven't told me what the payrate is on this position.

I thought all Background Checks and Drug Test charges where the
responsibility of the contracting company?

What are your thoughts on this?
