You don't mention if your across-the-WAN connection is from a domain-joined
machine.  Integrated Windows authentication doesn't work if you're not
logged on to the domain, so in the external scenario it reverts to basic
authentication.

You can go in to the IIS Manager snapin and check the directory security
settings on the site in question.
