Sounds as if the welcome screen was turned on... by an update perhaps? Go to Control, User Accounts, Change the way users..., uncheck the Use Welcome Screen box. This will disable fast user switching for the computer, but probably isn't necessary in your case. You should now be able to logon with credentials...
