We don't have WSUS. All are patched directly from MS.

Welcome screen has always been on. I saw where the "Administrator" user normally doesn't show up on the Welcome screen, but it has been there up until they rebooted this morning. Go to Control, User Accounts, Change the way users..., uncheck the Use Welcome Screen box. This will disable fast user switching for the computer, but probably isn't necessary in your case. You should now be able to logon with credentials...
